Here is a list of Software and Utilities that I have used and found helpful. All Programs are free and require no payment. As I come across more, or remember another one - I will add it. None of these links should ask for money. Always use up-to-date Virus Software.

 

Open Office

If you cant afford the mighty Microsoft Office, and want a full featured Word processor, Spreadsheet, database and Presentation package for free, this is the one to go for. Fully compatible with most files and packages.

The "Gimp"

The Gimp is a freeware program for manipulating photographs in a similar way to Adobe Photoshop. Gimp is very powerful and has features that Photoshop doesn't.

Picasa

Picasa is an excellent Google program that allows you to Edit, Organise, Create and Share Pictures. An Excellent Program

AVG Virus Checker

There are many Free virus checkers about available for free home use. Businesses cannot legally use this software without paying. I use AVG on my personal computer at home, and it has always worked well for me.

Super AntiSpyware

Bit of a naff name, but will detect and Remove Spyware, Adware and Remove Malware, Trojans, Dialers, Worms, KeyLoggers, HiJackers, Parasites, Rootkits, Rogue Security Products and many other types of threats.

Audacity

Audacity is a free, easy-to-use and multilingual audio editor and recorder for Windows. You can use Audacity to:

  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.
  • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
  • And more!

Image Resizer

Do you have loads of photos that you want to compress (to maybe upload to the web, or send by email)? This wee utility does them all at once, puts them in a different folder and renames them all. All very Quickly and efficiently

Would you like to record music from the Internet? Replay Music is a great program and easy to use.

Snipping Tool for XP

Vista and Windows 7 Have a really handy utility called a SNIPPING Tool (try it - it's really handy) that allows you to copy sections of your screen.

XP doesn't have this, but I found a free equivalent. It's called Gadwin PrintScreen.
